I got me a job interview!

I was going through my email clearing things out and ALMOST DELETED an email from University of Chicago offering me a phone interview for the position of Campus Activities Advisor that I hadn't seen yet.  Lucky for me I went all <insert quizzical turn head like a dog look> and promptly opened it!

Haven't heard back yet what day they're going to call me but it is going to be after new years.

Job Summary:
Leads efforts to coordinate with students and staff to develop activities, programs, and initiatives related to student life, and/or community involvement. Develops and implements some direct programming. Plans and oversees the execution of a variety of student events and programs. Advises, supports, and recommends concepts for programming to leaders of various organizations and programs. Acts as a liaison with other student life offices. Mentors organizational leadership; approves expenses; attends meetings and events; trains treasurers concerning financial policies and procedures; communicates and negotiates with outside vendors, with and, on behalf of organizations or programs; negotiates, signs, and administers contracts; maintains organizational records; and archives relevant information and program materials. Develops, implements, markets, assesses, and evaluates programming throughout the year. Develops and implements protocols for evaluating the effectiveness of programs. Attends and monitors events. Addresses complaints and concerns. Hires, trains, mentors, and supervises other staff members.

Hopefully all goes well!  I'm still waiting to hear back from a similar job at DePaul, Student Organizations Coordinator, that I applied to a couple weeks ago.

Random Thoughts...

So it has been a really long time since I posted on this blog that was supposed to keep everyone posted on my life here in Chicago.  Sorry about that.  Life has been pretty on and off for me the last few months.

Anyways, I decided that I'm going to start a journal.  No, I'm not going to post it on here.  Maybe bits here and there of something I write, but I do want to keep some things private.  I think it will be good for me.  Maybe it will even keep me from posting stupid emotional moments on Facebook too haha.  But yeah, I'm going to start a journal to get my thoughts out of my head which will also hopefully let me actually get some sleep at night.  This being up until 4-5am thing is starting to get real old real quick.

My recent life though:
  • Made it through my first semester of grad school alive.  Got 2/3 grades in so far and given my crazy first half of the term I did a lot better than I thought I was going to!
  • I officially start reading for Northwestern on Jan 2.  After my training last week I am actually really excited to keep going even though I may have denied the first application I read...
  • I will be home for Christmas Eve and day and still have my job at Express.  It's crazy what just straight up asking will do for you.  No crazy made up stories necessary.
  • Will be back in Michigan from Jan 3-10 for actual visit time with friends due to my short time in for Christmas.  Keep your calendars open people! haha
  • Loving living in the city.  It has only snowed a couple of times so far but nothing has really stuck.  We shall see how the rest of winter goes though.
  • I have friends here, which is great.  So glad that so many of us in my program get along.  Lets hope we find more time this next semester to hang out like we said we will.
  • Relationships... as if I would actually be able to get one of those going successfully.
  • I am eating like a pig and have still managed to lose 10 lbs the last couple months... I'm back down to 130 lbs which I haven't been at since like 5th grade.
  • I was given an awesome recipe for Hot Cocoa Cookies from a friend and they are amazing!  I have made them a couple times now and I'm pretty sure they are going to be a new cookie staple for me haha.
  • ... those are the main updates I guess lol
I'm super excited to be coming home for the holidays!  I have missed everyone so much.  It is going to be weird though with this being the first time the whole family has not been together for Christmas.  So much has changed this year for the Sikora's though so I guess this is just one more.

This is pretty... Merry Christmas!

This is a really pretty picture I found while roaming around the internet.  Enjoy!

Amuse Yourself!

Not a whole ton going on round these parts for me.  Classes start up next week and I have an orientation for the School of Education at Loyola tomorrow after work.  Hopefully those will bring some talking!

In the mean time.  Here is a ridiculous video that Caleb showed me.  Not my fault if you're slightly offended!

Equality Apparel Returns Again!

Alrighty folks, so once again I have decided to keep moving forward with Equality Apparel.  With that, I have some new designs that I would LOVE your opinions on.  Remember, these are (more or less) concepts and are subject to change.  Also, I probably wont do the designs on a white shirt unless people really liked them in white.  Also also, although shown on V-necks, crew necks are still quite an option.

Let me know what you think!  Please give each design a 1-5 rating.  5 being the best, 1 being the worst.

My Little Lunch Spot

So when it's nice out and I get the chance to leave the office for lunch I found this great place to eat.  It's right next to the Art Institute (I feel I may have talked about this in a previous post now... oh well).  It's set back from Michigan Ave. with a nice "berm" of trees/fence-ish.  It's also set into the ground further removing it from it's busy surroundings.  The trees throughout create a canopy that makes it its own little space in the city.  On top of all that there is a large fountain in the middle of it all.  The white noise is just enough to drown out the busy street just outside.

There is some pretty good people watching too!  Here is a picture of my nice, relaxing lunch spot.

Really doesn't do it much justice...

New Fav Pizza

I had a craving for pizza while at work today and decided to order some for dinner.  I've ordered pizza one other time from a place right down the street from my apartment but wasn't too impressed.  Figured I'd try something else.

Looked online to see what my options were and found a Sarpino's a block or so away. (granted I had it delivered but it was free delivery!)  First off, they take 15% off just for ordering online!  They have 53453 deal options.  I got free garlic cheese bread!  Anyway, on to the actual pizza!

Picture really doesn't do it justice.
I opted for a "gourmet" specialty pizza.  I got the Pesto Lovers... just wait till you hear what's in it!
  • Pesto sauce
  • Grilled chicken strips
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Onions
  • Red & green peppers
  • Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese
Holy crap... soooooo freaking good!  I know you're jealous of my dinner... and my next lunch and dinner and possible added lunch!

On a side note, I had planned on going to the gym before the pizza got here... but 1) it was raining, 2) I took a longer nap than I thought I was going to, 3) I was determined to 3 star the first level of Angry Birds... fatty ho!

Floor...

So remember how I was telling you my first A/C unit was leaking all over my floor?  Well, this is what the aftermath of it is.

Yeah, mind you at first it was just a huge bump on my floor.  Until I woke up yesterday (still kind of a zombie) and forgot about it... my foot did not appreciate it.  Sent this photo to my building peeps.  We shall see if anything is to come of it.

Meet Gloria!

I am happy to introduce you all to a Miss Gloria!

As you can see, Gloria is my new, and beautiful, HTC Trophy.  She is a glorious Windows Phone and I love her dearly!

She is the replacement for the replacement of my poor Norma (my old Chocolate Touch that died).  I have a feeling that Gloria and I are going to have quite the love affair together.  Between her Zune software, X-box Live games, 2093840423958043 available apps, and BEAUTIFUL interface (the home screen whatnots), it's going to be a great couple of years.

So here's to us Gloria!  May our love only grow with the OS upgrade coming in a few months!

A good lunch hour?

Hey there my adoring fans!

So I decided to walk over to the Borders on State Street during my lunch hour.  I figured I would see if they had anything worthwhile still left before they close forevers (mega sad day).  They didn't really have all that much, although I didn't look through the books too hard.  I was mainly looking at the 50% off blurays, which I got Moulin Rouge and HP Chamber of Secrets, so that was good.  Now comes the other part... while walking on State Street, which is basically a mini Michigan Ave, I went past into the Aldo that happens to be having their clearance sale right now.  I did this with the Aldo close to my house but they didn't  have the pair I had seen online that I liked and simply figured I would be done with that.  Well, didn't realize there was a State Street Aldo until now.  They had the shoes, not my size though.  Then they threw out the whole free shipping if you order from the store... oops.

So yeah, I went out to get some movies, and ended up with a cute ass pair of shoes too!

What the hell day?!?

Okay, so the day started off kind of shitty, not gonna lie.  I've been having some issues with my A/C unit the last couple of weeks.  Its been dripping and leaking water all over the place so I put in a work order once and they came but of course it had stopped and was all dried up.  Well, I wake up this morning, swing out of bed, and splash... I step into a pretty big puddle on the floor.  Now it had done this before but not NEARLY as bad.  This time  it had flowed under my bed where my shoes are and soaked a lot of them... including my nice once I got from Italy.  Not Cool.  So was late getting out the door because I had to get all the water up off the floor.

Work wasn't bad or anything, I just had nothing to do.  I actually (and unfortunately) managed to discover the awful/awesomeness that is The A List New York, which is essentially the Gay Housewives of NY on Logo.  So yeah, I watched that all day... I'm so bad I know.  Left work and it was hot out, nothing new.  Just wanted to get home to a hopefully fixed A/C unit...

Alrighty kids, so they indeed came to fix my unit.  Even replaced it... however, they replaced it with a 15 year old (tag said made in 1996) piece of crap.  Now my first one, although leaky, was pretty new.  It had a nice digital control with an energy saver mode and everyone, which I used constantly because I enjoy being energy efficient most of the time.  Back to the new old POS.  First, it's ugly.  It has a crappy foe wood front.  Knobs that have the option of "hot or cold" and "hi or low."  In order to have the vents not pointing at the ceiling I have to jam a pen in it.  Now the best part... it doesn't blow out cool air for shit!  I was sitting on my couch with just my undies (it was warm and I didn't feel like putting cloths back on after getting out of my work ones) and was still sweeting... my couch is a whole 10 feet away from the A/C unit.

So I do my venting to the obvious peeps (Mom, Caleb, Facebook) and then what happens... the damn power goes out.  Now my first reaction is "crap, that old POS blew the freaking fuse!"  Did my additional ranting to the peeps, then decided to investigate further.  Apparently my entire block managed to lose power.  So now I'm at the boy's place because he has power and A/C that works great!

Oh, then on the way to Caleb's place my phone decided to freeze every 4 seconds... fabulous.

Need of a Camera Phone

Yes, at the moment I am back in the stone age and have a loaner phone (because my Chocolate Touch took a crap on me... ew) without a camera.  Now normally I really wouldn't care, I've never been on top of things when it come to the technology game.  HOWEVER, since I moved to Chicago I have seen some ridiculous things and soooo wish I had a camera on my phone to discretely document the crazy/awesome.

Example 1:
The one night I was coming back from doing something (really don't remember) and waiting for the L to come what do I see, I guy in Birkenstocks, white knee socks... and a bath robe.  This would have been a hilarious picture!  But alas, I had the craptastic loaner.

Example 2:
On my way into work at the intersection right in front of my office there were a bunch of male models, all only in their undies and dress shoes/socks.  Again, craptastic loaner strikes again.

I would LOVE to finally start my "Seen in Chicago" update to this here blog (which I really need to get better at posting in a timely fashion) but silly phone just wont work.  There is hope though!  Next week I should be able to finally upgrade my phone!  My upgrade date is the 12th but the Verizon store said they might be able to do it a week early.  I'm not sure why it's a "might" situation, this seems like a "yes I can upgrade it early" or a "no you have to wait" type thing, but whatevs.

Anyway, oh look, I have run out of coffee.  Looks like I'm going to have to go back outside and get another one from Starbucks.  Darn, I'm going to have to see the shirtless boys again!

July in a nutshell

Okay, so I realize I completely blanked out with the whole blogging thing for the entire month of July so we are going to do a quick recap!  Here is July in a nutshell (but not like the squirrel I posted).

Month started out pretty slow still waiting for the new job to start.  Painted my apartment at the end of June (as posted) so I was cleaning that up for a while.  OH!  I forgot that I am actually not too bad of a cook!  I had random things that I had bought food wise in my fridge and I managed to put them together into some pretty rocking meals.  One such meal was for a picnic Caleb (just friend at that point) and I went on the 4th of July to watch the fireworks at Navy Pier.  If I remember correctly I made a chicken dish that was in a mushroom wine sauce thing.  I think I even wrote down what all I did for that one too... no idea where it is though!  Moving over to the fireworks I guess.  They were okay.  It was 15 mins of what was said to be matched with music.  I am soooo spoiled by the Detroit fireworks!  It was a nice evening though.

Lets see what was next.  Alright, I guess we'll move into the boy department because some of you have been bugging me about that.  So (of what I recall, I'm so bad) Caleb and I decided to officially start dating just after the fireworks.  Our first date was to go see Beauty and the Beast the musical.  It was not so great, the musical, not the date.  Second impromptu date, was to see Peter Pan in the big tent the next day.  He managed to score free tickets from a friend!  It was awesome!  Blah blah blah, we hung out some, blah blah blah.  Ummmm (I'm going to regret this later I'm sure), I think we dubbed each other boyfriends the night we saw Harry Potter Part 2.  If I remember right then, our "anniversary" is the day the final HP movie came out.  At least there's an easy reference if I need one!  Okay, that's enough about that! ^_^

What else, what else... oh right that whole job thing!  So I have my own office!  I think it's bigger than my room back home.  My building is located in the Loop.  It's a block east from Michigan Ave across from the Art Institute.  There is actually a great little spot I found next to the Institute to sit down and have lunch.  There are a bunch of spots to sit down and a nice fountain that drains out the noise of the city pretty well.  Things have been going a little slow work wise.  Granted, it's a brand new position and everyone is still trying to get used to me existing and figuring what my uses really will be.  My boss assures me that once the quarter starts (which DePaul has 7 quarters... yeah) I'm going to be swamped!

Hmmm, what else was in July.  Last week Caleb and I went and saw West Side Story.  It was good.  Some parts were hard to hear and they made some of my favorite songs be in Spanish... not a fan of it.  Other than that I think that covers July...  Hopefully I'll be a better blogger in August!

... So, there you goes!

I bout died!

So I was catching up on my friend Jamiil's blog today at work (yes I look at other people's blogs rather than updating mine b/c I fail at blog-life).  While on there I ran across the picture with the follow caption:

"I think my sink is clogged."

I... BOUT... DIED!  I saw this, paused for about half a second, and BUSTED out laughing in my office.  Shortly after I had the pleasure of showing my coworkers that walked into my office to investigate the mass hysteria.  I therefore felt I had to share with my many (hahaha) adoring fans!

Wow, it's been a month!

Wow I am clearly slacking and really have no good excuse what so ever for not posting.  I will blame the boy anyway, I don't think he reads this! ^_^

Okay, I will try and get some good updates posted this weekend.  In the meantime, here is a picture of a random squirrel with a coconut stuck on his head!  Enjoy!

I Painted!

So I finally got around to painting my apartment!  Here are some pictures!

I have the paint (darker shade of current color) to do an accent wall where the posters are to the right of the window.  I probably will do it eventually, I was just all painted out at that point! haha

Oh yeah... I HAVE A JOB!

So I somehow managed to miss posting that I am (assuming background checks clear which better not be an issue) the new Event Planner for the DePaul University College of Computing and Digital Media!

After what I felt, and clear was, an excellent interview last week I heard on Tuesday from DePaul's HR department that I was being offered the position.  I of course accepted it right away, who in my position wouldn't right!?!

Well they explained the benefits and all that to me because guess what?!  I am a full time, salaried, administrator!  I never thought I would at 23 and before I even started my masters program would have this type of job.  On top of that it's pretty much exactly what I want to be doing with my life!  On top of that top it's a brand new position so once I fix the issues within the office organization wise they said I could start branching into other aspects of thing if I wanted!

I am so blessed that I am able to have this job.  Now I get to sit back and actually relax in Chicago and not be spazzing and stressing that I'm jobless!  I start July 11th so I have plenty of time.  Which is good time to have because I'm pretty sure once I start I am going to be busy, busy, busy!

Kind of Weird Dream

RANDOM!!!

So I had a dream last night and the only bit I can remember is that I was on vacation or just a trip or something with my family.  We went to some restaurant and there were shops and stuff kind of like Frankenmuth, but it wasn't there.  We finish eating and we all kind of split off and go our own ways to shop.  I randomly come across a pen (like a child's accordion gate thing) of penguins!  The gate randomly falls down and a rush of penguins come running out and one jumps on my leg and then manages to climb onto my shoulder (not quite sure how that worked).  Anyway, not sure what happened from there but then I also gained this little Asian boy at some point.  He was probably between 3 and 5 years old and we just walked around and looked at stuff.  Not quite sure what happened to the penguin.  The kid kind of took a liking to me and I seemed to also take a liking to him.  He was soooo damn adorable!  Then right before I woke up I remember him saying don't go as he jumped into my arm with a little stuffed penguin doll... well I know where the penguin went! haha  But yeah, I can't get the kids face out of my mind.

Not sure if that means ANYTHING at all.  I will leave that up to the resident dream gurus.

Cartoon Crushes!

So I stated watching Gundam Wing again.  Which for those who are left in the dark, it's an older anime series that was on Cartoon Network's Toonami for a while back in the day.  Anyway, with that I realized looking back that three of the main characters on the show were totally some of my first crushes.  Yes, they are all male characters and yes, this was WAY before I even thought I was gay.  So it's extra funny for me now!

So character one was Heero Yuy.  He's kind of that bad ass kid who (well is a trained combat fighter) is just sexy because he's such an asshole!

Next we have Zechs Merquise also known as Milliardo Peacecraft.  He's starts the series as the bad guy who is a soldier and ends up remembering his past as a Peacecraft and goes good guyish.  In the end he goes from hot bad guy to really hot not so bad guy!

Finally from Gundam Wing was a mister Treize Khushrenada.  Zechs' boss I guess you could say.

But not to forget my other favorite childhood anime cartoon was Outlaw Star.  From that show there was Gene Starwind.  He was just super cute to me!

Well, that's my random rant.  It popped into my head as I was watching and figured it would be interesting!

I Hate Phones

First week I'm here with interview(s) around the corner and what does my phone decide to do at about 8pm last night?  That's right, it dropped service.  I got home that night and turned it on and off, took the battery out, left it out all night hoping that in the morning it would work again... nope!

I was going to spend the day working on my interview homework for tomorrow.  I added a trip to Verizon to the agenda figuring it would be some quick simple fix... nope again!  I got to the stop and the guy at the counter (Chris, who was pretty cute I might add) was pretty confused on why it wouldn't be working.  He ended up calling customer service and they said to restore the phone so we did that... nothing.  So the next option is to re-flash (I think that was code for update) the phone.  However, the store I was at didn't have the equipment to do that so I had to trek it over to the store on Michigan Ave, which is about a 20-25 min walk... it's 95 degrees out, sweet!

So I get to the Mich Ave. store and there's like a 20 min wait to see someone, whatever, there's A/C so no complaints from me on that one!  Get to the counter and apparently it takes about 15-20mins to do whatever to the phone.  Again, whatever, I went next door and had some Panda Express.... mmmmmmmmm tasty.  Get back to the store hoping the flashing it worked... nope yet again!

Now I get to trek it back over to the first store because Chris (cute guy at the counter) said he had some old flip phones he could loan me.  I get there and there's another wait, again, no worries there's A/C.  So now I have this awesome janktastic Samsung flip phone that doesn't have a camera (guess it makes it REALLY old) and there is a 911 button in it which I have never seen on a phone before.  I'm just hoping that I don't accidentally hit it... that could end poorly.

Well, now I'm on to working on my interview homework that I was planning on starting like 3 hours ago.

My New Place

So move in was a snap with the help of my family!  Special shout out to Mom, Dad, Matt, Dan, Kristine and Anna for all the help!  Alrighty, so mind you there are still quite a few things out of place that need to find a home, but it's pretty much done.  I also intend, once I get some funds coming in, to paint the living space.  Probably a blue of some sort.

As a refresher:  I am living in the Gold Coast neighborhood, which is kind of the north end of downtown I guess.  I'm on the 8th floor of my building and my window faces west so I actually get some really sun in my apartment!

But enough of all the chatter, here are the pictures I'm sure you are wanting to see.  Welcome to my digs!

It's Almost That Time!

Holy cow, I move to Chicago at the end of the week.  I will only be living in Michigan for another... 4 days!  The more I keep having to say goodbye to all of my friends and family the more it is hitting me.  Kind of crazy to think that after all the years of me saying I would end up in Chicago and now it's actually happening.  I'm leaving the suburbs of Detroit and moving to the big city!  Granted, it would be nice it I could say "big city" and for people to be confused that I'm moving to Detroit... but that's another post!

So yes, moving to the Chi-town.  Classes don't start until the end of August and I am currently still without a job.  With that I have a game plan!  (Like I of all people wouldn't have a plan).  Give myself a few days to really settle into my surroundings, and then print a ton of resumes and hit the town!  Someone is bound to hire a guy with a face like mine right!?! (Feel free to make joke now about my face)

Alrighty then, I still have a bunch of people to see before I go and still have my room to pack up, mostly clothes... which will take a while.  With that, I should go to bed now.  Have to finish priming the outside of the house in the morning!

My new boyfriend...

So this guy needs to be my new boyfriend... just saying <drool>

On a side note:  I think I'm going to try my hair like his.  Not too different from what I already have, but a little different.

Hawaii Wedding 2011!

So congratulations to my brother Matt and his new wife Kristine on there beautiful wedding!  If you didn't figure out the wedding was in Hawaii.  Kris is from there so it was only a destination wedding for like half the guests.

Such a pretty couple!

So anyways the ceremony was beautiful and the reception was a blast!  The food was ridiculous!  I'm made that I didn't take pictures of the plates.  The first course was 5 different types of salads... omg, I ate them all!  The main course was pretty darn good too.  Prime rib, gotta love it!

Here are a few fun pictures!

The wedding party! ("Would you crackers like to hear about the time I met the Loch Ness monster?")

The groomsmen's socks.  Matt had to get UofM into the wedding somehow!

We're just so silly!

So yes, Hawaii (even with all the rain we had) is such a dang beautiful place and I really hope I get a chance to go back and really explore all the islands.

Grad School Schedule

So grad school is going to be pretty awesome (well at least for me).  We are only allowed to take up to 9 credits, and that's full-time.  I only have to meet for class once a week too!  So assuming I get the courses/sections I want, here is what my class schedule is going to look like:

Student Affairs Profession in Higher Education - ELPS 425
Tuesday 7:00-9:30pm

Social Justice in Higher Education - ELPS 432
Wednesday 7:00-9:30pm

Curriculum in Higher Education - ELPS 430
Saturday 9:00am-1:30pm

It's pretty awesome the amount of time I have available for a job, or two even!  This is going to be pretty awesome!  Well lets just hope that this Thursday when I schedule I get all the courses I want.  Oh!  Really cool thing about Loyola's class scheduling system.  They have a shopping cart so you can grab everything in advance and just hit "enroll" at the magic time and be done with it!  So much nicer than LTU's hope it loads and you have all the right numbers game!

New Comic Strip

So I found this new comic strip that I haven't seen before, Dog Eat Doug.  It's pretty cute, here's one that made me lol a little bit.

I got the apartment!

So holy cow, I just signed my lease and faxed it over to the building office.  I have an apartment in Chicago!  So it's official that I will be a resident of Chicago as of June 1st.  I will be in the apartment that I posted a couple posts ago with the built-in bookcases and the small separate kitchen.  Another cool feature is that I get to paint it however I like!  I think I'm going to go with the same color scheme that I have in my current bedroom at home.  I Photoshoped a picture real quick because I'm a dork like that:

Mind you, the case work is white, picture I had was a bit off to begin with.
But yeah, I'm so dang excited!  Now I just have to figure out cable/internet, furnishing, a job to pay for it all, and everything else I'm forgetting right now.  So yeah, that's my new apartment!

Okay I lied... LOVE this apartment!

Okay so I lied, THIS is the apartment I've actually been looking at but I wasn't sure if it was in my price range and it IS!  It's more than the last one I posted but it has a seperate kitchen and these AMAZING built-ins!  Here are some pics and the floorplan.

EEEEEEEEEE! (I'm happy)
